The Crier is conducting interviews to get to know the new teachers at Conant. This week, the Crier is featuring science teacher Justin Chang.
Crier: What classes do you teach?
Chang: I teach two sections of Biology (S131 and S137).
Crier: Why did you choose to become a science teacher?
Chang: I chose to become a science teacher because I had a great interest in science, and it’s always been kind of present in my family. My sister went to school for genetics, and she always contemplated zyomes, which sparked my interest. So I just thought that it was amazing and interesting how that how you could explain things going around in the world through scientific concepts.
Crier: What made you specifically interested in biology?
Chang: It is interesting learning about the living organisms and explaining why these things are alive.
Crier: When did you know that you wanted to be a science teacher?
Chang: It was during the middle of college. My main goal in pursuing biology was because I wanted to do something that would help other people. I wanted to spread my biology knowledge to my students to help them thrive.
Crier: Do you do any activities outside of school?
Chang: I usually help out with the athletic department. I was a videographer for football. I also help with storage for wrestling and basketball. I am a sponsor for Science Olympiad. I tutor in the library Wednesdays after school in the tutoring room.
Crier: Do you have any hidden talents?
Chang: I can eat a whole box of pizza by myself.
Crier: If you weren’t a science teacher, what would you be?
Chang: I would try to be a firefighter. I think being a firefighter is cool.
Crier: Do you have any advice for future students pursuing biology?
Chang: My suggestion is to look at the world and at yourself. See what you really enjoy about the world, and see what you really enjoy about yourself. And then when you figure that out, you will truly love biology.
